I received an interesting email from Google about it’s Google Analytics package this evening.

It spoke of sharing your google analytics.

Really? I love how they’re adding political buzz words - add transparency! Compare against industry verticals!

Now in making light of their new features - I’d like to point out something positive. Something Facebook missed out on.

They made their new features known in an email. - unlike the economic stimulus package mailing. They made this feature OPTIONAL. Opt-in, if you want to share! Compare against other people!

Now, I can see your hesitation. You use Google Analytics. You’re also big enough to say “I don’t want to share my statistics.” But why? This may just be my personal feelings speaking, but if you consider yourself worried about how your statistics compare against your competition, you have bigger issues than numbers. Higher statistics mean more people visit. Are they all clients? Are they all potential employees?

If freakonomics has taught me anything, it’s that numbers are useful to promote exactly what you want - it’s all a matter of how you use them that determine how effective your spin is - or merely how you present your correlations/causations.

Essentially, I’d attribute this move to the need for business transparency, and also for the benefit of businesses looking to gain on their competition - if you want to know how you do against the competition, you can. At the same time, I wonder how easy it is to get the information and not share…
